netdata, the open-source real-time performance and health monitoring, released v1.17 !

Hi all,
Release v1.17.0 contains 38 bug fixes, 33 improvements, and 20 documentation updates.
At a glance
You can now change the data collection frequency at will, without losing previously collected values. A major improvement to the new database engine allows you not only to store metrics at variable granularity, but also to autoscale the time axis of the charts, depending on the data collection frequencies used during the presented time.
You can also now monitor VM performance from one or more vCenter servers with a new VSphere collector. In addition, the proc plugin now also collects ZRAM device performance metrics and the apps plugin monitors process uptime for the defined process groups.
Continuing our efforts to integrate with as many existing solutions as possible, you can now directly archive metrics from Netdata to MongoDB via a new backend.
Netdata badges now support international (UTF8) characters! We also made our URL parser smarter, not only for international character support, but also for other strange API queries.
We also added .DEB packages to our binary distribution repositories at Packagecloud, a new collector for Linux zram device metrics, and support for plain text email notifications.
This release includes several fixes and improvements to the TLS encryption feature we introduced in v1.16.0. First, encryption slave-to-master streaming connections wasn't working as intended. And second, our community helped us discover cases where HTTP requests were not correctly redirected to HTTPS with TLS enabled. This release mitigates those issues and improves TLS support overall.
Finally, we improved the way Netdata displays charts with no metrics. By default, Netdata displays charts for disks, memory, and networks only when the associated metrics are not zero. Users could enable these charts permanently using the corresponding configuration options, but they would need to change more than 200 options. With this new improvement, users can enable all charts with zero values using a single, global configuration parameter.

Hi all,
Release v1.18.0 contains 5 new collectors, 19 bug fixes, 28 improvements, and 20 documentation updates.
At a glance
The database engine is now the default method of storing metrics in Netdata. You immediately get more efficient and configurable long-term metrics storage without any work on your part. By saving recent metrics in RAM and "spilling" historical metrics to disk for long-term storage, the database engine is laying the foundation for many more improvements to distributed metrics.
We even have a tutorial on switching to the database engine and getting the most from it. Or, just read up on how performant the database engine really is.
Both our python.d and go.d plugins now have more intelligent auto-detection by periodically dump a list of active modules to disk. When Netdata starts, such as after a reboot, the plugins use this list of known services to re-establish metrics collection much more reliably. No more worrying if the service or application you need to monitor starts up minutes after Netdata.
Two of our new collectors will help those with Hadoop big data infrastructures. The HDFS and Zookeeper collection modules come with essential alarms requested by our community and Netdata's auto-detection capabilities to keep the required configuration to an absolute minimum. Speaking of new collectors—we also added the ability to collect metrics from SLAB cache, Gearman, and vCenter Server Appliances.
Before v1.18, if you wanted to create alarms for each dimension in a single chart, you need to write separate entities for each dimension—not very efficient or user-friendly. New dimension templates fix that hassle. Now, a single entity can automatically generate alarms for any number of dimensions in a chart, even those you weren't aware of! Our tutorial on dimension templates has all the details.
v1.18 brings support for installing Netdata on offline or air-gapped systems. To help users comply with strict security policies, our installation scripts can now install Netdata using previously-downloaded tarball and checksums instead of downloading them at runtime. We have guides for installing offline via kickstart.sh or kickstart-static64.sh in our installation documentation . We're excited to bring real-time monitoring to once-inaccessible systems!

The Definitive Guide to Reddit

Step 1. Go to Reddit.com, or download the Reddit app.
Step 2. Open a Reddit account. Choose a creative username, and a password you can remember. From now on, your account will be prefixed by " u/ ". The u stands for user.
Step 3. Go to the "search" bar. Type in any topic you'd like, and from there you can find a subreddit. Subreddits will be prefixed by " ". You can explore almost anything you'd like.
Step 4. Scroll through your subreddit to see posts from the community, or make your own with the post button. Make sure to consult the rules of the subreddit, and only post content related to the topic.
Step 5. If you are familiarized with the mechanics of subreddits, you're ready to personalize your reddit experience. Open the "options" tab.
Step 6. There's many options to choose from, so do whatever you'd like! Change colors, go to Night Mode, or even alter your information. That can be a useful skill if you gain followers.
Step 7. You will see a few checkboxes, to see or restrict certain content. There's ones for blurring images unsuitable for work, and also ones for hiding unwanted users. Do what you please.
Step 8. If you change your username to binary code for a few days in October, you unlock the secret dev features. This doesn't mean anything major like banning users, just simple things usually dealing with cosmetics. More or less giving the Inspect tool an interface for people who don't know how to use it, but it can be fun to play with fonts.
Step 9. Dev features can cause some conflicts in programs running simultaneously. If you have no programs running, you can leave this guide. If you have your Steam or Discord account running, users may connect to chats you're in. A brief user list is included below.

Step 10. Determine the intentions of the users. This can be done using these guidelines:
Message starts with: A-E: dangerous, follow plan I F-P: dormant, follow plan II Q-T: safe, follow plan III U-Z: undetermined, follow plan IV 1-999: urgent, follow plan V Video Call: follow plan VI Other: follow plan VII
PLANS:
Plan I - Safety Close Steam and Discord. Go to Reddit and change your personal data to something you remember. Do not use the information of family members, no matter how distant. Go into your computer's file explorer and delete all game files, steam user data, discord data, anything tied to those programs. Open your computer's Antivirus software and run four scans. If nothing shows up in any of the scans, you should be fine. If malware or hostile programs are detected, bring your computer to the Second Street Parking Garage in Tuscon, Arizona. Go to the third floor and drop it under the yellow van. Come back two days later, and your PC will be problem-free.
Plan II - Caution Ask their intentions in simple words. A good example is "Why are you messaging me, [username]?" If the response is hostile, refer to Plan I. If the response is anything else, for example, talking about their cat or the high gas prices, refer to Plan III.
Plan III - Avoidance Make brief small talk with the entity, speaking in a way that you think may please them. Talk about their interests, and end every message with STOP. When they finally say "farewell, happy holidays," or some variation (i.e "farewell, merry christmas,") then reply with "find you elsewhere, friend". You must make sure to carry out conversation with no more than a minute between responses for the entire duration. If at any point the entity becomes hostile, refer to Plan I.
Plan IV - Outcomes Unknown This has only been recorded to happen 7 times in the past 13 years. Do your best to determine if it is a hostile message. A tell-tale indicator is if they are offline, there is danger. Refer to plans I and III in accordance with the situation.
Plan V - Assistance The entity will text you with a seemingly unimportant request after a series of numbers. Examples include:
"947, Make yourself a sandwich." "838, Open a jar." "478, Find a leaf that is half-torn." "998, Watch your neighbor mow the lawn for 187.84 seconds." "616, Hide under an oak tree." "389, Go to sleep with headphones on." "930, Go for a half-mile run at dusk."
Leave your computer on, follow the instructions clearly, then return to your computer. Close the chat window, and then re-open it. The messages will be gone.
Plan VI - Indifference Do not answer the video call. The volume of the ringtone will increase more and more, reaching decibel levels enough to destroy your headphones. No matter what, do not remove your headphones. Doing so will answer the call, and you will be subject to seeing images you will never forget. The images will be saved to your computer, and a few weeks later you will be SWATted. You will be either thrown into federal prison, or killed.
Plan VII: Unknown. Document your findings.

This release contains 14 bug fixes and 24 improvements
The release introduces major additions to Kubernetes monitoring, with tens of new charts for Kubelet, kube-proxy and coredns metrics, as well as significant improvements to the netdata helm chart.
Two new collectors were added, to monitor Docker hub and Docker engine metrics.
Finally, v1.14 adds support for version 2 cgroups, OpenLDAP over TLS, NVIDIA SMI free and per process memory and configurable syslog facilities.

Free MailFlow Monitor. Rejection / Delay Text Alerts, Group Policies, Alerts By SMTP Code, Trouble Shooting Tools including header analysis. MailFlow Monitor is EveryCloud’s (Our) free, cloud-based, round-trip tool that sends you an alert as soon as there is an issue with your email flow. Settings are adjustable to allow you to choose how much of a delay is acceptable and which types of bounce alerts you want to see. Helps you get to the bottom of a problem before users (or your boss) have even noticed it.

Postman is a popular, free app to make API development faster and easier. It offers a powerful GUI, saved history of requests, flexible monitoring, automated testing with collection runner, mock servers, and unlimited collections, environments, tests, and sharing. It also provides detailed documentation.

Microsoft Sysinternals Suite is all their utilities in one convenient file. Contains the all the individual troubleshooting tools as well as help files, but not non-troubleshooting tools like the BSOD Screen Saver or NotMyFault. A shout out to azers for recommending this one.

RichCopy is a simple tool written by a Microsoft engineer named Derk Benisch. It provides a much-appreciated graphical interface for the very popular Robocopy command-line utility.

Windows Update MiniTool is an alternative to the standard (and sometimes overbearing) Windows Update. It allows you to control updates by giving you the power to search, install, and block Windows updates in any way you like.

Space Monger gives you a graphical image of your whole disk, where large files and folders are easily identified. This handy tool can be run from a USB drive, so you don't even need to install it. Thanks for this one and Windows Update MiniTool go to mikedopp.

UNetbootin is a terrific, cross-platform utility for creating bootable live USB drives for Ubuntu and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. Thanks go to Gianks for this one.

CopyQ is a clipboard manager that adds some advanced editing and scripting capabilities. It monitors the system clipboard and saves text, HTML, images and more into customized tabs. From there, the saved content can be copied and pasted directly into any application. Clipboard history is easily searchable and can be filtered. Suggested by majkinetor.

Desktop Info provides a quick view of every kind of metric about your Windows system right on your desktop. The display looks like wallpaper but stays resident in memory and updates in real time. Gives you a quick way to monitor what any system is up to, while using very little memory and requiring almost nothing from the CPU. This one was recommended by mikedopp.

Healthstone is a lightweight, self-hosted, agent-based system-monitoring solution that runs lots of customizable health checks. The dashboard runs on a Windows or Linux server, and it has agents for the Windows and Linux hosts you want to monitor. You can customize the dashboard to send notifications via email, Pushbullet, or NodePoint tickets whenever a client stops checking in or any of the configured checks fail. Configuration is retrieved from the dashboard by all agents in the form of templates, which are stored in the templates folder and can be customized for your needs. Thanks to mikedopp for this one!

Rufus is another utility for formatting and creating bootable USB flash drives. This one works with MRB/GPT and BIOS/UEFI. Rufus is about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or Windows 7 USB download tool when creating a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO. It is also marginally faster for creating a Linux bootable USB from ISOs. We first heard of this one from Gianks, but there were quite a few others who shared the recommendation as well.

Axence netTools is a set of ten free tools for network scanning and monitoring. Includes: Netwatch (multiple host availability and response-time monitoring); Network port and service scanner; Wintools (view of launched processes/services, remote register editor and Windows event log view, HDD/RAM/CPU details, custom queries based on WMI protocol); TCP/IP workshop and SNMP browser; Traceroute; NetStat (list of inbound and outbound connections and open ports); Local info (tables with local configuration details, TCP/UDP stats); Lookup (DNS and WHOIS records); Bandwidth test; and NetCheck (LAN hardware and wiring quality check). This was recommended by DollarMindy as an "easy ping monitor with email alerts."

MediCat USB is a a bootable troubleshooting environment with Linux and Windows boot environments and troubleshooting tools. A complete Hiren's Boot Disk replacement for modern hardware that follows the Ubuntu release cycle with a new update released every 6 months. The DVD version was originally recommended to us by Spikerman "for when you need to helpdesk warrior."

MobaXterm is an enhanced terminal for remote computing. It brings all the key remote network tools (SSH, X11, RDP, VNC, FTP, MOSH) and Unix commands (bash, ls, cat, sed, grep, awk, rsync) to Windows desktop in a single, portable .exe file that works out of the box. The free version includes full X server and SSH support, remote desktop (RDP, VNC, Xdmcp), remote terminal (SSH, telnet, rlogin, Mosh), X11-Forwarding, automatic SFTP browser, plugins support, portable and installer versions but only 12 sessions, 2 SSH tunnels, 4 macros, and 360 seconds for Tftp/Nfs/Cron. Clonezilla is free, open-source software for disk cloning, disk imaging, data recovery, and deployment—helping with system deployment, bare metal backup, and recovery. Cloning efficiency is optimized by the program's approach of saving/restoring only used blocks in the hard disk.

SPF Record Testing Tools is a query tool designed to help you deploy SPF records for your domain. It validates if an SPF record exists and whether it is formatted correctly and entered into your DNS as a proper TXT record.

PS Remote Registry module contains functions to create, modify, or delete registry subkeys and values on local or remote computers. This one was recommended to us by IhaveGin.

PowerCopy GUI was recommended by Elementix, who described it as "similar to RichCopy, but it uses .Net, PowerShell, and Robocopy. A good (non-install) alternative." The tool allows you to set up predefined options, one-click access to help and log file, and instant error analysis.

Gitbash is a package containing bash and a collection of other, separate *nix utilities like ssh, scp, cat, find and others—compiled for Windows—and a new command-line interface terminal window called mintty. Recommended by sysacc who tells us he's been "dealing with log files lately and I've been using...Gitbash a LOT... It's part of the Git tools, I love having access to Linux commands on Windows."

Easy2Boot is a collection of grub4dos scripts to be copied onto a grub4dos-bootable USB drive. Each time you boot, the E2B scripts automatically find all the payload files (.ISO, .IMA, .BIN, .IMG, etc.) on the USB drive and dynamically generate the menus. Thanks to Phx86 who says it "creates a very versatile USB drive. It checks a lot of marks other various tools did not. Formats NTFS, your ISO boot disks doubles as standard NTFS storage. Drag and drop .ISO files to the correct folder, then boot directly to them. Boot menu reads the .ISO files and builds a menu based on what is loaded on the drive. No fiddling around with custom boot menus when you add a new .ISO."

CCleaner is the fastest way to eliminate temporary files and Windows Registry problems. Our own Matt Frye says, "When a machine is having problems, this is almost always the tool I use first. It also helps to ensure privacy by getting rid of traces left behind (such as cookies) by web browsers."

Netwrix Auditor Free Community Edition is a great auditing/monitoring tool for the Windows sysadmin. It lets you see changes and access events in your hybrid cloud IT environment, so you can stop worrying you'll miss critical changes to AD objects, file server permissions, Windows Server configuration or other security incidents.

WinSCP is an SFTP client and FTP client for Windows with a GUI, integrated text editor, scripting and task automation. It allows you to copy files between a local computer and remote servers via FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV or S3 file transfer protocols.

Hi all,
Release v1.18.0 contains 5 new collectors, 19 bug fixes, 28 improvements, and 20 documentation updates.
At a glance
The database engine is now the default method of storing metrics in Netdata. You immediately get more efficient and configurable long-term metrics storage without any work on your part. By saving recent metrics in RAM and "spilling" historical metrics to disk for long-term storage, the database engine is laying the foundation for many more improvements to distributed metrics.
We even have a tutorial on switching to the database engine and getting the most from it. Or, just read up on how performant the database engine really is.
Both our python.d and go.d plugins now have more intelligent auto-detection by periodically dump a list of active modules to disk. When Netdata starts, such as after a reboot, the plugins use this list of known services to re-establish metrics collection much more reliably. No more worrying if the service or application you need to monitor starts up minutes after Netdata.
Two of our new collectors will help those with Hadoop big data infrastructures. The HDFS and Zookeeper collection modules come with essential alarms requested by our community and Netdata's auto-detection capabilities to keep the required configuration to an absolute minimum. Speaking of new collectors—we also added the ability to collect metrics from SLAB cache, Gearman, and vCenter Server Appliances.
Before v1.18, if you wanted to create alarms for each dimension in a single chart, you need to write separate entities for each dimension—not very efficient or user-friendly. New dimension templates fix that hassle. Now, a single entity can automatically generate alarms for any number of dimensions in a chart, even those you weren't aware of!
